Who are The Mighty Flipper?
Flipper were born on a drunken Saturday night in Lydney in November 1999. The brainchild of Steve & Nick, previously of Dustbug, a local band playing original material. They were both tired of original material and felt the local music scene lacked a covers band playing “Britpop” hits and the songs which inspired those songs. This resulted in the first batch of ideas, including songs by Oasis, The Kinks, Blur & The Rolling Stones.
Next move was to recruit a guitarist. Mark was a good friend of both Steve and Nick and was the ideal candidate. The bass shoes were less easy to fill. However, Dave, who had recently moved to the area came to the rescue. A practice was arranged and the line up was complete:
Steve – Vocals / Rhythm Guitar
Mark – Lead Guitar / Vocals
Dave – Bass
Nick – Drums / Vocals
The band clicked instantly. The different styles and influences all helped to build the original Flipper sound.
In September 2001 Nick left the band to start a family. Who would pick up the sticks ? Another old mate came to the rescue. Dave E fitted in perfectly and the mighty Flipper machine continued to roll on. The band continued to gig furiously and spread their wings to include Gloucester, Bristol & Cheltenham.
However, in May 2005 Dave decided to hang up his sticks due to other commitments. The game of musical drum stools continued as Nick came out of retirement to beat the skins once more.
Twelve years on, we are all enjoying ourselves. We now have over 90 songs in our repertoire and are constantly adding to them. Flipper is still evolving. There’s plenty of life left in the old…Fish yet !
If you’ve seen us recently, we hope you enjoyed yourself. If you haven’t, we hope to see you soon.
Cheers.
The Mighty Flipper.
